Courtesy of our partners at Ski Club GB, here are 10 top tips for making this winter one to remember.

Ski trekking in snow on a ski season1. Witness the fitness

Make this the season that you set yourself a pre-season fitness programme… and stick to it! Ski for longer, ski better, ache less and recover faster. Cardio fitness is important, but make sure you consider ski-specific strength and flexibility exercises as part of your preparation. Visit Ski Club TV for more ski fitness tips.

2. Get inspired

As winter draws nearer, excitement amongst skiers and snowboarders only intensifies. We’ve got plenty of videos on Ski Club TV  to inspire you before your next mountain adventure!

3. Go on… treat yourself!

Whether it’s a new ski jacket, or a pair of cosy socks, having gear that you’re happy with can be a game-changer in the mountains. Spend your cash on that one piece of clothing that’ll really make a difference this season.

4. Safety first

Take an avalanche course, attend a lecture or even refresh your first aid qualification. Visit the Ski Club website so you’re equipped with the knowledge to safely explore beyond the piste – it can open up more of the mountains for your enjoyment.

5. Explore

Take a break – if only for a day – and leave the mega-resort behind and check out the local area where only the locals ski. Or, book a holiday to another country altogether and experience a different kind of mountain culture. Take a look at our Resort Guides if you’re looking for a bit of inspiration.

Après-ski, for many, is as much a part of a trip to the mountains as the snow itself, but that pre-season fitness won’t last long if you spend every afternoon in (or dancing on) the bar. Why not take a night or two off and seek out some of the other activities available in most resorts after the lifts shut. From romantic excursions (like moonlight snow-shoeing) to adrenaline-fuelled thrills (such as ice-climbing) – what you do away from the slopes can sometimes be what makes a holiday truly memorable.

7. Back to school

Make this the season that you kick your skiing or riding up a notch. Whether your goal is busting through the intermediate plateau, or honing your freeride skills, the choices are hugely diverse. Our Freshtracks development holidays are the ultimate answer for those up for a schooling! Ski and snowboard lessons offer a lot more than ‘bend the knees’ these days!

8. Join the five-ring circus

Sochi 2014, with the addition of new freestyle ski and snowboard disciplines, is bound to be an exciting one for fans of British sport, with some genuine medal prospects and a squad packed full of talent. Even if you’re not heading to the shores of the Black Sea in February, there’s bound to be a buzz about these Games, so get involved! Visit skiclub.co.uk/sochi for more information.

9. Don’t write off April

Often in April, many resorts are eager to entice late-season visitors with special deals and rock-bottom prices. April is typically associated with soft spring skiing and long sun-drenched après-ski, but it can also bring snowstorms and deep powder. Take a chance on April if you’re looking for some more time in the mountains this season, without breaking the bank. April is also festival season.

You can watch the webcams and study those historical snow reports all you want, but there’s no guarantee that you score the best conditions of your life, even if you follow steps 1-9. So make sure you look on the bright side of life, and set out to make the most of whatever Mother Nature throws your way. Just remember… a bad day skiing is still better than a good day in the office!
